Just home from the Blues Cruise on a Holland America cruise ship out of Fort Lauderdale. Seven days of almost incessant blues from solo acts, duos and bands. Almost every variety of blues was played including New Orleans, Chicago and West Coast. Tremendous guitar playing from many top names including Johnny Winter. Lots of great harp with name talent like Kim Wilson and Rick Estrin both of whom were tremendous. I saw all of their sets. Easy interaction with the musicians. Hell, Rick Estrin hit on my wife and was hysterical. It was obvious the pros are fans as well as artists as they were often seen at other shows. Lots of pro jammimg as well as pro/amateur jamming sessions so mortals had an opportunity to play with the big guys.
Met many people who've been on a number of these cruises. We'll go again!
If you're a pro player and get asked to participate this is a no brainer.

I've been on two cruises, there is nothing better. My girlfriend and I are on the wait list for January, but the line doesn't seem to be budging. It's booked solid. Still hoping though.

$10,000 for a penthouse suite single. That's....a different kind of blues.
How was Lee Oskar?

That Blues cruise website is the most complicated one i have ever encountered on the web. I want to go on any other Cruise i sit at my computer with my credit card and Book IT.5 minutes Job done. Waiting lists, random numbers to remember page to page then after a half an hour of mucking me around I'm told i have to go on a waiting list!?For something a year away! I thought capitalism was all about supply and demand, why the hell don't they just put on more cruises and make even more money. I can't imagine a car dealer saying "sorry mate Ford thinks that model is too popular so they aren't going to make anymore." Sorry 'bout the rant...but i feel better now ^

Lee Oskar did a seminar where he explained the use of his various diatonic tunings to make playing certain musical styles easier. Some of the audience was perplexed by the theory. But the seminar included Lee playing to several jam tracks and he was great. His ability to play music in almost any genre is easily world class. As a lip purser he's mostly got a crystal, clean, clear sound.
Lee didn't have any sets of his own. He did attend the pro jams and was invited several times to jam in some of the more structured sets of other artists.
Future cruises sell out fast. Their website took me a bit of time to work through but I don't recall any major issues though I did call their 800 number for assistance. Needless to say we stayed on a lower deck where the prices are fairly reasonable compared to a penthouse or even a stateroom with a balcony.
