Seems like it would be possible to rent a harp am in Los Angeles. Anybody done it?

Seriously? There are no end of rental companies in LA. The first to come to mind is SIR. They've got just about every Fender amp currently manufactured including the RI '59 Bassman.
If you're looking for something like a HargGear, Meteor, Sonny Jr, or such, unlikely a rental company would have anything due to lack of demand. You could try an ad in craigslist but personally I wouldn't hire my amp out to anyone I didn't know or at least was familiar with. ---------- LSC

Happens all the time. Ask the promoter to find an amp and offer free tickets to the show.
