Hi all! Our duo-outfit; 'Transatlantic Mojo' + backingtrack master Lawrence Fritts has done a new video. Classic slowblues 'Call it Stormy monday'. I play in second position on a marineband crossover in C, customised by Markus Korhonen. I use a peavey ampkitlink to connect my mic to my iphone. I use the app 'Ampkit' for digital amplification and recording.

Feedback is always welcome, I didnt get the high end stuff down as I wanted it so hints here is very welcome. It's pure improvisation and I only did one recording. Everything was kind of guitarinspired, though.

Sweet! Nice feel, as much as the notes you play. Very soulful, it swings, it sways, it grooves, it's there. And the singer has a real good way about him too, and a good smooth bluesy voice. The two of you fit well together. Thanks.

I like your sound and phrasing and I think you were in the pocket in that respect.

I think that if you laid off some during the singing it would have brought more gravity to each of y'alls parts.

Thanks for commenting guys! @harp-er - Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! I did this as a improvisation and that always gets me deeper in the pocket than when I try to learn stuff note-verbatim :D I tried to use tempo and dynamics more than different notes to keep it varied, even though I did a bit too much 4-5 trills in the solo.

@Shane - Thanks for your constructive critique! I knew that my fills sometimes went into the vocals before I had ended my phrase. I tried to make sure in mixing that the vocals was clear and stronger than the harp in those cases. But you are right that some of the gravity was lost. The harp got a too big a role in the song. I'll rein myself in better next time!

You have a smooth sound.

However, like most that play this song, you are not taking advantage of playing to those changes that move beyond the typical I IV V.

Also, the 6OB...don't play it just to show you can play it, but use it sparingly and within a longer line in that area of the harmonica.

Thanks for taking time listening and commenting Iceman! I started out trying to make sense of the non-standard chord progression for a while but just let go and just tried to go more with feeling and quality of each note instead of using smarter/fresher/cooler/more sophisticated notes. I just couldn't make that sound interesting. I try to get a kind of 'gospel-preachy'-sound with the fills at "I pray, Lord!". The 1D-2B-2D motif. More connecting with the lyrics I guess. What notes or scales would you suggest as a fresher choice with the progression?

G9 / / / | C9 / / / | G9 / Ab9 / | G9 / / / |
C9 / / / | C9 / / / | G9 / Am7 /| Bm7 /Bb7 /|
Am7 / / / | Cm7 / / /| G9 / C9 / |
G9 / D augmented / |

Maybe I over did the 6 OB some but it was not because of showing off, well any more than the whole video was I guess. I kind of like those broken phrases with three notes fills. I think ending on the third keeps a lot of tension in the phrase. I like the way 6OB bends up and cracks as an effect. Like a bend on the sixth string on the guitar.

I guess I overdo some stuff which I'm currently into... I guess when I have tried everything and got it down I'll be able to keep it balanced.

But I'll keep the backing track and keep trying to get something new out of it, trying out new phrases and keeping away from the vocals better!

Thanks again! Your advice is always nuggets! Anyone else care to comment?!

There is a Michalek video that was posted here recently in a posting on this song that should head you in the right direction.
