Cathy Lemons is something of an institution on the San Francisco blues scene. She happened by our jam last night. The amazing Volker Strifler was the host band. She asked Volker and I up to help her on this tune, which she wrote. It's a slow minor blues in C. Harp solo is about about 5:10. If you have more time Volker bookends the piece with solos. He is so great.

See how the tone thins out when I go way up on the harp in the second verse? That's because I suck at keeping the front of the low end of the harp sealed when I'm up there. Your cupping gets better for years.....Your cupping gets better for years..... Your cupping gets better for years..... I still have years to go!

I switched to a low F harp at the end.

Comments appreciated...

Nice work Greg. What a pleasure it must have been to play with a band so good at staying out of your way.

Really awesome, wouldn't be to hard on your upper alot of guys struggle with it,you had the balls to go upper register, thought it was a nice break from the heavy guitars, and matched the singers soaring vocals. My belief and limited experience, but plenty of years listening,it don't hurt to get airy up high, you feather a melodic tone counterpoint to the singer, hit that perfect holding note, you will get the right looks.

As usual you are a great advertisement for your mics. I can't imagine how good it sounded live. Awesome vibrato, and your 'thin' tone is better than most peoples best.

V e r y N i c e! Your tone does all the work for you Greg! You just put it in a pair of shoes with a mic and can sit back relaxing at the bar while your tone carries the tune! :D I always get lost in third when playing blues but you are seriously on top of your game. Great!

Thanks, guys.

To some extent I DO believe that if the tone is there you can get by with playing a lot less. And because I don't have the discipline to practice 16th note speed patterns like Jason, that's all I've got! Being in the business I am has really forced me to think about tone a lot and I've worked very hard on mine. I do believe you get betting at cupping and mic technique, and of course acoustic tone, for years. I can easily recognize the guys who are better than me at it. Some because they've been playing for 40 years, and some who simply have great practice discipline and work really hard at it. Aki Kumar is a great example of the second type.

it sounds very good Greg. IMHO, a problem with getting a seal and that tone on the high end is that it boosts the volume way up and can get overwhelming and even piercing. I purposefully loosen my cup at the high end and pull away from a vocal mic a little for that reason.. The volume came out very even and the playing was nice up there.. nice stuff...
