So, I sat in with a friend's band the other day. Played pretty well, the band liked it, the crowd liked it, good times all around...almost all around.
Listening to the recording, I hear this from some guy talking at the end of a song: "Harmonica players are either really good, or really bad. This guy SUCKS!"
A minority opinion, no doubt. Still, it keeps one humble.

You played well, so if you are in a rut, only you really know?

And we all have had to endure the polite golfers clap at gigs...We're not quite sure if the audience is happy or just bored? But at least they seemed to like it, and for our ego, that's what really counts ;)
You probably didn't play what he/she wanted to hear... so the rude remark...As long as you don't talk to yourself that way then, "on with the show" :)
And as Rick would say! |

If you're pleasing the whole crowd you may not be taking enough risks. And it's true, there ARE people who just DON'T LIKE HARMONICA. Go figure.
I like the opposite: I was at a funk jam one night and when I was called to the stage a couple of people at a nearby table were saying stuff like "Who's that clown? What could HE know about FUNK?) I got on stage and the band did some Joe Turner and Tbone Walker with me up front on harp and vocs- not quite funk but definite swing- and when I was done and taking my seat, people were shaking my hand and getting a bit gushy. And I could not help but to feel GOOD there for a minute!
I have messed with these things for a long time and I still have a lo9t to learn, but usually I can hold my own. I look forward to meeting other harp guys and sharing what we know. I rarely turn down an offer to sit in for a song or two. That's where I find out what I know and what I don't. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene

i'm not concerned about it. i'm not the greatest by any stretch, but i can play. and i know that the crowd, and the band, dug it. there was a time i would have taken this to heart (and it would probably have been accurate), but i'm past that now. just thought it was funny to get a reaction like this.
a friend later told me that she overheard two guys trashing the band who'd played the night before. she thinks this was one of them. so it might say more about him than me.
fwiw, you can also hear the guy's date respond in a very surprised voice, saying "Really?? Why?". i'll take that as a compliment.

IMHO few people have actually heard a harmonica played 'well' It is a specialised minority instrument, even though most have one in a drawer somewhere. Therefore, most of the audience have no base of listening experience when you are playing.
just enjoy yourself and as Uncle Frank said 'who gives a f*** anyway'

It is impossible to please everyone.

The guy was probably a wannabe that never got anywhere with the harp. Majority rules my friend!
