This causes me to reminisce..of not much interest except that I get to relive the night in my mind.

In Detroit in the 80's - 90's, I was the piano tuner in charge of all pianos used at the Detroit Montreaux Jazz Festival (Detroit on its best behaviour).

In the late 80's, Miles Davis was booked to play at the (no longer there) Ford Auditorium for this festival.

At that time, I wasn't really aware of Miles that much, but was hanging back stage at the show (mostly cause it was a cool hang). When Miles took the stage, his security moved everyone out of the area, but for some reason, not me nor my wife at the time, Mary.

At one point, Miles strolled around the front of the stage playing and walked the circumference of the stage, eventually making his way behind the curtain in order to circle the whole stage and reappear at the other side.

Miles' management was ecstatic, cause this meant he was happy and in a good mood. (He's circling the stage! they shouted).

So here was my wife and I, behind the curtain as Miles slowly walked by us. I remember that red glowing trumpet as seen in the above video (same group playing that night).

Here was a presence so huge that neither of us dared breathe or engage him. He just looked at us through those sunglasses of his and strolled by. It was truly like being in the presence of a King or the Queen of England.

During the break, Robben came over and started chatting with us. He told me that Miles didn't know it yet, but this was his last gig with him cause he wanted to leave and pursue his own musical direction.

At the time, I really had no idea of the magnitude of this situation or who these guys really were, but there was sure some powerful vibes flying all around.

In my life, (almost like Forrest Gump), I've found myself in unbelievable situations with very famous people many times over the years.

ah well, back to the present...

Iceman,
Wow
Robben said that in six months of touring Europe back then, Miles said nothing to him on stage or off.

They were in Milan, Italy and Robben bought himself some boots (nice)

That night Miles moved over to him during the playing and said the only thing ha said him for six months..

'Hey nice boots Rob'
