Masterfully Written

I was bumping around the internet looking at various tuning charts and I stumbled across this article written by Joe Filisko in May of 1999. Apparently Joe was addressing some unfounded criticism of Howard Levy on Harp-l. I found the article masterfully written and it revealed a side of Joe that I was here-to-fore completely unaware of. It is worth reading.

Thanks for this, f-t. I remember that when I first heard Levy through a harmonica playing friend, I was absolutely floored how profound his accomplishment and was thoroughly amazed with the fluidity he could coax those jazz runs and classical asides with. I also remember a good amount of griping from a bevy of self-appointment guardians of diatonic harmonica tradition who couldn't say enough bad things about Levy; plainly they didn't want the instrument to evolve and certainly didn't want to hear about anyone inventing new ways to play the harmonica. It says a lot about Filisko that he would take the time to write such a well phrased defense of his friend, a argument I agree with, that Levy is motivated by nothing more than a love of music and a need to play the music he hears in his head.

Good article

"I am not really concerned with turning people on to Howard and his playing style, just trying to educate them to what he is doing and has already done. If you don't like what you hear coming from his harp or his heart, then hopefully you will not be able to deny his contributions to the advancement of the instrument. I support him mainly because I KNOW that he is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of rare talent, and also because he has pioneered (and is pioneering) a new approach to playing. I just love “progress” and am addicted to enabling it to happen as swiftly as I can. I know of NO other player in the entire history of the instrument who has overcome the obstacles that Howard has. He deserves our respect and support . . . "
