Thanks so much for posting this. I've seen this before but this is the sort of music that bears witnessing again. Robben Ford is a terrific blues-jazz guitarist, and brother Mark Ford has been a favorite of mine for a while now. His tone is absolutely beautiful, I think, and his playing is fluid, fast, full of ideas.

@Frank
Wrong, so wrong, about Jason.

Influences flowed into his head, but out, after many years came JR's own tone.

Eventually when you reach the zenith your own style and tone is there..

I would not put JR and MF in the same league IMHO

Topic has veered, but Harmonicanick has said what I was thinking just this morning. Jason has great acoustic and amplified tone. Both came from years of excessive experimentation to get the tone he wanted. Trying thousands of gear combos, working hours on three notes...

though he certainly would be the first to admit his influences

Harp players that utilize lots of fast passages are going to gravitate to a tone that probably uses quite a bit of compression and without a lot of relay or reverb. It just makes sense. Otherwise the articulation would just be lost. Lester Butler and Mark Ford probably wouldn't have been happy with each other's rigs. That said I, especially, like Mark Ford's recorded tone and his musicality. I always think of him as a musician first, harp player second, very creative.
All the best,
Jay

I would not be surprised if Jason counted Mark as one of his influences. Mark has been playing longer than Jason, so it's not out of the question that Jason would have heard him and found inspiration in Mark's work. Jason, of course, went on to devise a style and technique completely his own, just as Mark created his own signature sound from being inspired from his principle influence Paul Butterfield.

Nick, that's the first time I was wrong today - so you got me ")

Like Ted, I agree it is highly possible when Jason was a hungry youngster and searching for inspiration he discovered Marks "amped" tone and loved it...

The first time I heard Jason's amped tone - I immediately thought of Mark Ford.

I was taking lessons from Mr. Ricci in south Florida back in 1998-2000 and can testify that he was indeed listening to Mark Ford (the self-titled CD with M.F. on the cover wearing sunglasses). It was in rotation and we talked about it, but (and I'm sure the Cat himself will correct me if I'm wrong) I wouldn't say he was "studying" it more than any other cool CD.
