I LOVE Loopy HD. Better and more versatile than any hardware looper I've tried.
I did this on Loopy. It's been posted before - but since you're inquiring ;) I made the original beat with the 'Figure' App and ran it into Loopy via an app called Audiobus. Then I looped all the harp and sax parts over it.
There are various ways to get a mic into your iPad or iPhone. The one you already own is your earbuds / with inline mic that came with your phone or iPAD. The mic on there will work and is a good way to start. With a camera connector attached you can use any of the USB audio interfaces out there - with the mic of your choice. I use and Alesis multimix8 and a little ART usb dual pre. - though I often use the quick and easy thing with the earbuds. There are other options as well. The Sonoma Guitar works jack is a nice compact and well made piece. You don't need the camera connector for it.
To get started you need to lay down one track to set the timing for all that follow. Beat boxing, foot stomping - or something like it will work. You can also route in or copy in loops from other apps, as I did in the video. Then you can trigger a loop to record before the start point. It will wait till the loop comes round to the top and start the recording for you then so you don't have to trigger it at the same time your starting to play.
Watch the demos online and learn to use the scrolling toolbar to set multiple timed measures of your original loop.
There are also foot triggers availble. I haven't gotten one yet but will.
