I've seen a few threads on essential repertoire for jam sessions.

So how about sharing some thoughts on essential solo repertoire?

From my own perspective, this would be stuff that can be made to work by an intermediate (barely) tongue blocker with limited vocal skills. (Yes, not asking for much...)

Of course, any interesting, challenging, or leftfield ideas would be great too!

One of the first ones I did which worked fairly well was 'Don't get around much anymore' as done by Big Walter

Of course I should contribute my own list:

Bye Bye Bird

Erm...
That's it.
Hence the thread.

I'd have a look at Big Walter Horton's "Easy". Is a solo piece and as a "intermediate (barley)" player it should be fairly accessible as it's pretty slow and doesn't require too many bends.

It also sounds great tongue blocked.

I think Adam has a lesson on it.

I would suggest - making "Essential solo repertoire" personal to you and concentrate on tunes that resonate with you on a fundamentally deep way.

Learning and using simple songs that "have words" and tell a story will give you a great opportunity to strengthen many harp skills that will never occur by only concentrating on instrumental material alone.

So my advice is to - choose an easy song with words where the harp is used to evoke the mood and give it support :)

These 2 songs are some guideposts for what I mean...You can sing and play these solo and use your own harp ideas if desired. Or use Walters ideas until you feel you own the song, then do your thing with it :)

Thanks for sharing those thoughts, guys.
But I'm sure there's more than five!

Let me rephrase the question:

What was the first solo piece _you_ performed for an audience?

Heart2Harp has a lot of great ideas on the net :)

Bonny B. points the way too - tons of great solo repertoire ideas on the net from him...

Paul Lamb has some excellent advice too...
