I'm a fairly novice harpist, so forgive me if my question is obvious. On my D harp, the 2-hole draw generally sounds very nice, but when I've been bending it a lot the reed often get stuck, or sounds that way anyway, and I have to draw pretty hard to get it unstuck. I'm wondering if this can be solved by gaping it a little wider.

The reed may be slightly out of alignment in the slot or you may have a build up of gunk or a bit of stuff that chokes the reed occasionally. What you need is one of these. I don't think gapping it wider will help if it plays OK most of the time.

Thanks for that. The reed isn't misaligned, though, and there's no visible gunk on it. I may temporarily get gunk, i.e. saliva, on it when playing, but that wouldn't explain why it's the only reed, and the only harmonica, that seems to happen to. (I've also got a C and an A harp.) I'm wondering whether the 2 blow reed on a D harp is especially sensitive or something.

Try washing it under tap water at moderate pressure and then letting it dry out. This is a good habit regardless. If this doesn't correct the problem, my bet is that the reed arcs a little too much and is dipping down below the edge of the slot in the resting position. The easiest fix for this is to open the gap a bit. If that fixes the problem, you can always go back and take some of the arc out of the reed for a little better response. ---------- Greg Jones 16:23 Custom Harmonicas greg@1623customharmonicas.com 1623customharmonicas.com
