I'm rebuilding a few bullet mics with CM elements. I was wondering which gauge wire to use. I will be wiring from the switchcraft 2501 direct to the element, and also one using a pot. Planning on a drill/tap to the mic shell for the ground too. Just wonder about the proper gauge wire to buy.

I don't think it matters terribly much, except too thick and the heat required to solder it may damage your element and too thin more chance it will break.

I usually strip out a bit of wire from an old instrument cable, and that works fine.

One of the biggest mistakes I see when I work on others' mics is the use of heavy wire. It is not needed as the currents involved are miniscule. As DJDcripey said they can be harder to solder. They also place more mechanical load on the terminals every time the element is removed/re-sested - so they can cause premature terminal failure. I use 22 to 26 ga wire.

+1 for Greg. Stranded wire is better by far. Holds up better to vibration without transfering stress to termination points. This goes for amps to, with appropreate gauge of corse. Make the leads long enough to easily remove and work on the element...BN
