Hey folks,
does anyone have a lead for buying mic elements in the UK? I'd be interested in getting hold of a whole range of different ones to be honest.
Thanks ---------- www.josephstrouzer.com

Elements suitable for harp mics very rarely come up on ebay UK. That's the only source I've ever found in the UK for them though. I currently have a great mic for sale on ebay along with a few accessories for it, at a very reasonable starting price. Much cheaper than shipping one from the States. Anyone else got any other thoughts? and can anyone advise what sort of prices it would be to get elements shipped from US? ---------- www.josephstrouzer.com

Hey Joe. How's it going? We've met a couple of times I think, through Weston. Anyway, I've never really seen any suitable elements for sale in the UK. I did buy one of Greg Heumann's wood bodied mics but didn't order a cable with it. I found it impossible to find the a cable with the right connector (I think it's called a switch craft something or other) in the UK which leads me to believe the elements are not commonly found here.
Greg is probably you man if you want to talk about mics/elements etc. He made me a great mic with an old CM element in.
Hope you're good.

Joe - An average Hi-Z CM element bought from ebay and shipped from the States will cost you around £90. If you buy from a reputable dealer like Greg then the cost will be higher. Also if you get stung by customs charges which is often the case. Then you'll pay anywhere from £15-£25 extra in charges. So in that scenario a CM would cost you at least £105+. Then if you look at vintage crystal elements you could end up buying many that are dead before you find one with any life in it. You'll struggle to find one that's got any decent amount of life left in it. If you do it'll cost you anywhere from £90 upwards for each one. Of course don't forget those pesky customs charges. That'll add more to the cost. Again if you get one from Greg you'll pay more than that and of course. However one from Greg will work, so that of course is a bonus.

Thanks guys, I've already got a JT-30 with an MC-151 in it which I love and a SM58 that I've been using on occassions.
I've got a pretty worn out new issue green bullet which I spent years gigging which is now giving up the ghost (loose connections) and I never liked the sound of it anyway and I'm basically interested in trying some different elements in it...
Baker, nice to hear from you man, I hope you are doing good mate. I'm over in Bristol these days so not too easy to head over to hackney to check them out but I really appreciate the offer.
Thanks for the info again Kingley, we could have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids at customs... it sounds like Greg is definately the best option for getting quality stuff.

Joe- The new issue green bullet you refer to is the Shure 520DX right? If so then a good CM or CR element is a lot better sounding than the dynamic element that comes in those mics as standard.

Hey Joe – no worries. Didn't realised you'd moved. I'm up in Bristol fairly regularly. I'll let you know next time and maybe we can meet up then.

Hey Joe (sorry), I met you before Austria at the Left Bank in Bristol. I was hanging out with Henry Slim who was hosting/playing and Jim Evans who was also playing. Great gig. You and John Fairhurst were terrific, really had the place rocking. Dirtier than a Stokes Croft sewer drain is what I posted on my blog. I got some cracking photographs of you and John at the club that night too.
Anyway, I recently got into mic building and bought some shells, gaskets and switchcraft connectors from the states. I also recently bought a Shure CR element on ebay which enjoyed its 60th birthday last month. It may be 60 but it's not retiring just yet.
This is definitely not a cheap hobby but I'm hoping I can make a go of it. I play as well you see. You can swing by my place in North Bristol and try out this element some time.
Henry Slim is a great Bristol source for info on mics and he does great harp restos and mods too. He's done many mods for me and I bought a cracking Turner mic from him recently with a Shure CM element in it which sounds ace plugged into my VHT Special 6 amp.
I'll be catching you guys again soon in Bristol, but keep an eye out for the photos on FB as well.
Johnny

Chiming in late but feel free to contact me for element info. I DO charge a little more than you'll pay at random on eBay - but that is to cover the cost of eating the elements I buy on eBay that simply suck. I have a pile of them. I guarantee my elements.
I try to keep an inventory of the following elements:
99S556 Dual Impedance CM (what was in a Shure 520D) 99A86 / 99B86 CM (what was in a Shure 520) 99G86/99H86 white label CM's, Other "premium" CMs 99H86 / 99G86 white label CR's 99A86 / 99H86 / 99G86 black label CR's Astatic MC-151 Crystal Astatic MC-127 Ceramic Shure R7 Crystal Brush Crystal
