Enjoyed R. Sleigh playing into a glass...That is a really fun and easy way to beef up acoustic tone.

This was Winslow Yerxa's Bunch o' Guys project in 1997 or so.
The concept was interesting and fun to do, but there are intonation issues when you try to get all those harmonicas to play in good tune and in good tune with each other, as a lot of the notes are created through bending techniques.
Winslow charted everything out based on the original recordings. ---------- The Iceman

I concur with Larry-clamor is a little harsh-some of it is tape slowdown and recording quality, but yes, thereare going to be intonation issues in a situation like that-overall I enjoyed the hell out of it!!

Thanks, guys. I had to wince at a lot of our intonation issues hearing this again after all this time. THe Ellington stuff re-ceates the original charts, while the Django stuff is largely my new arrangements as Django didn't usually play with a 5-piece horn section. ---------- Winslow

Is Dennis playing an Alto Single on the section that starts at 13:24? And isn't that Joe Filisko using the glass?

Gnarly, Dennis appears to be playing a Tombo Contrabass (which, despite the name, is actually more in the baritone range). It has the same sort of layout (two row piano like layout, all blow notes) as the Suzuki Alto & Soprano Single harmonicas.

Dennis was playing Tombo Contrabass, as REM correctly observed. That was one of his jobs in that group. It has a range like a baritone sax. While Dennis didn't like playing that specific instrument much, he has since shown a strong predilection for playing extremely low-pitche harmonicas, so in a way it was a good fit.
Filisko, Sleigh, and I all used metal cups at different points. (Also, note Filisko actually playing a chromatic harmonica at one point.)
