I have learned a lot about music since I started playing the harmonica. Some of the formal training I had years ago is beginning to make sense in new ways as I struggle with this diatonic instrument. As I trombone player I never had to transpose. Now I have an instrument in every key which makes most things easier and some harder.

With all these harmonicas my trusty Bb trombone was looking kind of lonely. My local music store had a King P-bone trombone in Eb for about the price of a Seydel Nobel and I couldn't resist (trombones normally range from $600 to $3000). This is the trombone equivalent of a Piedmont, it is even made of plastic, but it plays surprisingly well (no funny taste). The slide moves well but makes a scratchy sound that I am told will go away as it wears in.

Now I am off on a new learning curve as I can do with the trombone a bit of what I can do on harmonica, grab another instrument, play the same action and have it come out in another key. It is both frustrating and fascinating at the same time. I am learning things about how music is scored and how to take advantage of different keyed instruments that builds on what I have learned from the harmonica.
