I'm sure I'm transgressing several unwritten laws here but I have to say Portnoy's playing leaves me cold. Very solid playing, but not when compared to other professionals of his stature. I know several amateurs who sound as good or better. Rick's tone through the same rig is MILES above - and so is his playing.

To me, anyway.

It seems to me, that personality goes a long, long, way in this business.

I love Rick Estrin. Always have.

I know exactly what you mean Greg. Jerry sometimes sounds very clinical to me and can leave me feeling cold too. He's a very, very good player who has played with some of the best in the business and I like a lot of his music. I had the pleasure of talking to him once and he is a very nice guy. If I had to choose between the two though it would be Rick all day long. Rick is just so infectious.

Guys, I feel what you're saying about the videos above. But, I would have to say that I think Jerry has fallen off a fair bit from the level he did play at when he was with Muddy and even when he backed Clapton on his blues records. He's a darn good support player and excels at the type of playing where he plays along while a vocalist sings without stepping all over them. Now, give me Kim Wilson on Jimmy Rogers "Ludella" album as maybe the best expression of that kind of playing I've ever heard – but Jerry in his prime killed as far as I'm concerned.

All that being said, Rick Estrin = HERO in my book.

Jerry Portnoy is a really cool guy, and a legendary player.

I love his story. His father had a store on Maxwell Street, and he saw so many amazing blues guys playing just a few feet from the front door and all along the sidewalk. Wish I had a time machine....

It is very typical that a lead player like Rick has got the pizzaz,Jerry was a sideman, and had the opportunity to work with the best, supporting them well.Estrin is electrifying in person, and his younger backup band plays off him with much energy. Both cream of the crop.
