Although the Avenger as it sits obviously is a fantastic amp, I've got a pair of matched RCA Black plate 6l6s as well as a variety of NOS preamp tubes lying around that I've thought about installing. I've never been a big fan of GT tubes in guitar amps. Not bad but there are better. I was wondering if any of the Avenger owners out there have ever tried changing out the GTs for something else?
I'd be particularly interested in any NOS exchanges. There are now some very good contemporary tubes such as JJ and TAD but in my experience, as good as they are, they never quite come up to NOS RCA, Mullard, Telefunken, and the like. To get optimum results you have to match the tube to the specific job which can vary from brand to brand, but man, when you get it right it sure is fun.
I swapped out the JJ that was in the amp when I bought it for a Mullard 12ay7 in my Gibson GA-6. Beside the useful drop in gain there was/is a whole other order of quality in the tone. I seem to remember Gary O saying that the RCA 6l6 black plates were the only tube he thought lived up to the hype.
Any experience in the Avenger or Cruncher? ---------- LSC

I swapped the tubes in my Cruncher for NOS 5881's - telefunkens, if I remember correctly. Smoothed the amp out to the most buttery, creamy tone. I have never tried power tube swaps in my Avenger. I hear a bigger difference from preamp tube swaps and I do have all vintage preamp tubes in the amp. ---------- *************************************************** /Greg

I have a pair of JJ's in my Super Cruncher-sorry-nothing to compare it to. The tubes were damaged in transit from a second hand owner. He refused to send me new GT tubes, instead sending me the JJ's. All I can tell you is it does sound killer!!

@Greg - As I suspected. I was going to go with a NOS preamp tube swap first. No biasing needed. I've used that Telefunken in other amps. Really nice tube but getting really hard to find at anything like a civilized price. Thanks for the info. ---------- LSC
