So tonight I was playing at Antone's with The Austin Blues All-Stars backing up Soul Man Sam. The All-Stars are a fairly recent project that has given me the opportunity of going back to just playing harp, primarily as a sideman, with a straight up blues band. Now it's been quite a long time since I had that role and particular with some real deal blues men. Matthew Robinson on guitar and vocals is particularly noteworthy. I don't give a damn if it's PC or not, with a couple of very rare exceptions, white people just can not sing blues and soul the way black people can.
Since I've been playing with these guys I've had the great fortune to back black guest artists both old and young. I can not tell you how much I am enjoying not just the playing but just hanging with these guys. And they keep saying such nice things to me about my playing and performance.
I think maybe it was Jerry Portnoy who commented about so many harp players getting hung up on gear and technique, learning shit off of tabs and all together using the wrong side of the brain. One forgets the feel, the fun, the transference of emotion in the moment. Getting lost in tone and space and feel and musicality, and music as sex.
Anyway, I've just got home and I'm pretty buzzed for a variety of attitude altering reasons and felt like passing some Zen shit on to y'all. Hope that's okay.

That's what it's all about eh? Getting lost in that fabulous moment when you can't differentiate between the music and the musician, and to play with people who feel this in the depth of their soul must be awesome. You are one lucky duck.

Of COURSE there are those who are my betters. So? I do this because I love doing it and people love hearing it. Nobody yet has asked me to "retire" so I must be doing enough right. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
