As I understand it, and will surely be corrected if wrong, the Kalamazoo Model 1 is in essence a Gibson GA-5 in a cheaper cabinet. Is this true and if so which variation of the GA-5 is the Zoo directly related to? ---------- LSC

There were so many different Gibson amps named GA-5. There IS one that is IDENTICAL to a Kalamazoo Model 2. They are very rare - I haven't seen many. But there are many other GA5 models that bear no resemblance. Gibson and Kalamazoo shared the same parent company, Chicago Musical Instrument Company, AKA "CMI". ---------- *************************************************** /Greg

@LSC I owned a Epiphone that was blue with plastic chrom looking trim. Made in the mid to late 60's. This was exactly like the one Greg was talking about. Most GA 5's had a 6v6 power tube. The one like the Kalamazoo had a 6BQ5. I had an early Gibson GA 5 with a 8 inch speaker that was quit different! It put out alot more voltage and went into shread mode quit early on volume knob. I tried putting 12au7's in it, but just never found one that sounded good with that amp and eventually sold it. If you want one like a Kalamazoo look for one with a 6BQ5 and a 10 inch speaker. That was the only GA 5 that had that combination. I also think it was the only one with a 6BQ5, but I'm not sure.

Yep - and the one that was identical to a Zoo was like the brown face ZOO in appearance, which puts it late in their life - probably '66 or '67. ---------- *************************************************** /Greg
