this is the song, from the Digital Tradition Folk Song Database, available from mudcat.org, transposed to G

"
Probably the oldest known Blues. W.C. Handy called it the "grand-daddy of the blues"
"

i am interested in reading what current blues performers think of this song. i don't want to flag my own questions before you have had a chance to play it

i learned it at age 11. 6th grade music teacher brought in a washtub bass and a snaredrum and taught us to sing it. when i picked up harp at 16 i learned to play it by ear in 1st, because i had no books. i learned everything by ear then. lets see it went.

They tell me Joe Turner's come an'gone
They tell me Joe Turner's come and-------gone
He left me here, to sing-----this-------song

He came here with 40 links o' chain
He came here with 40 links o' chain
