Hello MBHers,

I recently bought a Universal KD mic off of eBay, mainly because I thought it looked cool. It has the original dynamic element in it and the hard-wired cord. I figured I'd put a Shure CM in it but I decided to try it "as is" and see how it sounded.

The mic was amazing! I like it better than all of my MC151's and Shure CM's. Have any of you used this mic before, and what are your thoughts on it? Can these elements be put in a JT-30 shell? The shell of the Universal KD is really heavy...

Does anyone else like these mics or their dynamic elements?

Never seen or heard one. But any time you can find a 40's vintage mic there's a good bet it will be a good harp mic. They had lousy frequency response and lousy headroom - just what we want!!!!

I have one of those mics, but just the shell.

Check this thread:

Mine is very very light weight, maybe half of my JT30RH

is it the one with the red grillecloth that you outbid me for last week, cliffy? I wanted that one for the awesome polished shell.

I have one with the original dynamic element, the only mod being the addition of a screw-on connector so I could rid myself of the hardwired original connection. It is a dynamite mic, great for grit and gravel, and it sounds about the same when you loosen your cup, it just gets lower in volume.

if it turns out you don't want the one you ebayed, give me a buzz.

Hi dl,

Yup, that was me who won it. I never win anything, I was surprised I didn't get sniped at the last minute! I'm definitely keeping this one... Does yours have paint on it? I guess somebody brushed this shell to remove the paint. There are traces of paint in the creases.

Mine has the original element as well and I love it. I'm going to have a screw-on connector installed so I can use my Heumann in-line volume control with it. Or would a small volume control be able to be fitted into the stand hole, the way people do with JT-30's?

I would love to get more of these elements... I have some empty JT-30 shells and some Turner 254's that could use some finishing. Just have to get them powder coated first. All my mics with paint get chipped too easily,

I use a BMA in-line VC on mine, either with a wireless rig or hard-wired - I like the in-line VC as it is harder to inadvertently change the VC setting while I wave the mic about doing vocals or whatever...also I don't want to modify the shell by hogging any holes into it. It's pretty much perfect as it is.

mine has a brownish-bronze finish similar to one seen on the harmonica masterclass microphone collection website. It's not paint, more of an anodized kinda finish. Great patina, and it seems to be ultra-resistant to wear, abrasion, and sweat-induced degradation. I dig the ridges on the mic body too, it's easy to keep a grip on it when things get hot...

as far as finding more of those elements, considering that they are 60-70 years old at this point, good luck and happy hunting!
