In this video Nic is playing an Ultimate 57 mic that belongs to forum member smwoerner (Scott). It is made from a pre-Mexico Shure SM57 and has a Bulletizer shell.

The amp is Nic's 44-watt custom Bandmaster 3x10 from Mission Amps.

It's actually an old 545SD that Greg resurrected from near dead. It's a very hot and unforgiving mic that happily goes from nice and clean to a heavily overdriven sound. One of those nice finds that made to the right hands, Greg's, so it could have a new life.

I passed this on to a friend of mine who replied, and I believe Nic would appreciate this, "That guy could fart into an oatmeal box and make it sound great."

You can tell that is not as fat as the Rick Davis mic (707 or 520sl?), but still a very very good mic, and the playing is great as usual.

My main mic is a Shure 440SL.

Not as fat. I don't quite get that but maybe. What I hear is a better frequency response. My mental oscilloscope sees a smooth curve.

I thought the Ultimate mic sounded great. It was definitely different than my 440SL, which I think is a touch raspier. The Ultimate had a good crunchy tone, and the Bulletizer made it sound, well, bulletish.

I know Nic liked it for its articulation. He has a 545SD he likes, too. In the videos I put up of him at the jam he is almost always playing my rig. Last night was different because he came straight from the first round of the Colorado IBC event (which his band won) and brought his gear with him.

Nice work!

An Ultimate 545 made with a vintage element and transformer is the closest any stick mic will ever come to a really good bullet - and it surpasses ANY of the current mass production bullets by a wide margin for big fat tone. Nice to have a master like Nic to show it off!

Nics techniques sounded lovely through that rig... Really enjoyed that superb execution of phrasing too - He has such a nice touch of breathing the blues tones into their fullest exposure, just great playing! :)

Greg, I edited the YouTube notes to make it clear it is an Ultimate 545. Ya know, Nic's 545SD mic might be ripe for a conversion...

I think he'll be using mine for the Bohemian Nights Festival in Fort Collins this weekend. I expect he'll be calling you soon. His current 545 is a newer one and I know he wants a vintage element and transformer for the conversion.

He actually tried two of mine that night the one in the video and another non SD 545 with a Mexico element and a generic transformer in a short factory housing fitted with a bulletizer . The newer 545 was not even comparable in tone.

Nick is using about 15 energy units towards sounding great and 5 units towards looking cool while playing :)

In addition to great tone, Nic has a terrific vibrato. As one who is struggling with the vibrato, I wonder if he could post some thoughts on this subject. Thanks.
