I had a pretty amazing thing happen last night that I wanted to relate to you guys. I was on the street in Savannah by the river, just playing away for the heck of it. Along comes a group, and a guy asks me to play something, which I do. Out come wads of cash - $5s. I did not have a bucket, and I have never busked, it just was not what I was up to. Anyway, I waved them away and told them to have a great night.
Not five minutes later, as I am walking back to my car, I pass three homeless people, and they ask me if I can spare some cash. I start to walk by, but then I turn around, and without saying a word I pull out my harp and play for about five minutes for them. I can't exactly describe what it was like, but they really connected with the music - you could see it touched them deeply (slow blues riffs). At the end of it all, two of the guys told me that playing for them meant a lot more than any money I could have given them. I told them that it was an honor to play for them.
So... later I figured it out. I was supposed to take the money off the rich tourists and give it to the guys when I finished. Doh...
Anyway - pretty special. If the mood hits you, play for some folks living on the street and see what reaction you get.

Did a show a few years ago as an acoustic duo at the Caritas kitchen. They provide meals every day for the homeless. We played while they ate. One of the most appreciative crowds I've ever had and hey, they were lined up around the block. ---------- LSC

One of the first times wife and I played outdoors was a Mother's day Sunday. We headed downtown to the farmers' market, which was empty. There were some folks hanging out who obviously had no place to be. Jolene sang a few songs and for a while one homeless gal- probably our age or so- stood right in front of us and just soaked up the music with tears on her cheeks. Jo told me it was the best Mother's day gift she'd ever gotten. I do not mind a good tip from someone with disposable cash. When I can I pass some on. Especially at clubs or bars I make sure and tip the staff what I can. They work hard too. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene

Great stories...very moving. When you treat people like human beings and look at their souls not at their outer shell, then all is right in the world and the universe.
