One of the most frequently discussed topics on this or any other harmonica forum is the subject of combs and whether or not the material from which they are made affects the tone of the harmonica. In fact, the numerous friendly debates about combs played a major role in my decision to start making custom combs. Clearly, the harmonica world is sharply divided between those who flatly deny that comb material makes any discernible difference in tone and those who fervently believe that is does. All sorts of tests and experiments have been conducted and it only seems to have reinforced the pre-conceived notions of those present. And so it is only fitting that at the 50th Anniversary SPAH Convention next week that we re-open this can of worms and have some fun.

It is with great pleasure that I cordially invite you to attend……

The Great Comb Debate at the 2013 SPAH Convention
Wednesday, August 14th 3:30 PM

Celebrity Guests Include:
Todd Parrott
Richard Sleigh
TJ Klay
Brandon Bailey

Test your Listening Skills – Compete for Prizes and “The Golden Ear Award”

Each celebrity guest will each demonstrate five identical harmonicas built with combs made from different materials. Four celebrities – five harps each – 20 harmonicas in all. They will offer expert opinions, thoughts and comments as they take their turns testing and playing each harp that has been specifically prepared for them. Afterwards those in attendance can test their listening skills and compete for the coveted "Golden Ear Award" by participating in a random blind test to see if they can correctly identify each harp that is being played.

No - It’s not very scientific. It is not meant to be a laboratory experiment. The object is to focus on the intimate relationship between the harmonica and the player and between the player and the listener. When was the last time you had the opportunity to test five identical harmonicas with five different comb materials? For many, the answer is NEVER! You’ll have that opportunity at SPAH this year. After the workshop all the harmonicas will be available at the Blue Moon Harmonicas Vendor’s Booth for you to play and conduct your own blind tests. Play the same harps that were used in the workshop. Find out if you can hear or feel any difference yourself.

We hope it will be enlightening, entertaining and fun for everyone. Won’t you please join us?

I think combs should be physically identical - thickness, surface flatness. It does change many things.

Acrylic combs, for instance, are always pretty rough after cutting.

I mean it should be a sound comparison, and not comparison of "this comb plays better"...
