Guess the harp player

Extra credit for guessing the amp he is using.

Hint: It isn't Nic Clark and it is not a Mission amp.

I don't know who it is, but it certainly isn't Dennis or Ronnie. Both of them have certain stylistic tics, mannerisms--I'm looking for a nicer word! elements of style--that don't show up here. 1847's guess that it's somebody "doing jerry portnoy" is a good insight; my first thought was that the player swings a little, but not much, and that's what Portnoy does--swing a little, but not much--in his version of this song. Dennis swings much more than that, and both players would have rolled off a 2 draw ("awwwwwwnnnh") at some point.

The player has listened to and incorporated some of Little Walter's distinctive moves--not just the basic song, but the internal moves--and this is very strong, professional playing. It isn't Mark Hummel or Cadillac John, because it doesn't have quite the intensity that either player would throw into this.

Sugar Ray is a good guess.

It certainly isn't Kim or William Clarke, and one reason it isn't is that it lacks some of the freedom that they'd hurl into it--breakaway moves drawn from horn playing and B3 organ playing. It's a beautifully executed stylistic exercise--an aced final exam--without a single bad move, but there's one or two more notches in the direction of wild & crazy that, for example, distinguishes what Little Walter does in "Back Track" from this. Urgency. This is beautifully polished but without much urgency. It makes me go "Great!" but not quite "Wow!" Still, whoever did this makes me want to hear more. I'd buy them a big drink and shout at them while they were playing until they broke loose. :)

R. J. Mischo has that urgency, so I'm betting that this isn't him.

It definitely isn't Cotton or Estrin. Each of those players has a distinctive sound that isn't here.

It COULD be Aki or David, but Aki these days plays with somewhat more abandon than this (the urgency factor), and David--whose playing I only know from half a dozen cuts--has a slightly more distorted tone. But those are good guesses, because both of those players have the level of technical expertise manifested here.

Good challenge, Rick!

Is it Gary Smith--or one of his students?

I tend to think it's not him, because it doesn't sound like...well, like this guy, who DOES have the wow-factor and a memorable sound and style:

No correct guesses yet. I had never heard of him.

I know he knows Aki and Gary Smith and David Barrett and most of the blues heavyweights in the Bay area.

I ran into him while he was busking at Fisherman's Wharf and I was knocked out by his playing and tone, so I bought his CD and talked to him for a while. Very cool guy.

I'll let this go on just a little bit longer... I'm pretty sure somebody will get it soon.

Yep, it is Dave Earl. The clip is from the song "Harp Stompin'" on his CD "Harmonica Blues." The list of supporting players on the album reads like a Who's Who of bay area blues artists, such as Steve Freund, Paris Slim, Aki Kumar, Maria Muldaur, Kenney Ray, June Core, Michael Peloquin, and others.

Here is his website.

The amp he used on the album is a 1959 Fender tweed Deluxe. He gets a very nice tone, I think. Very impressive playing.

Did Dave Earl used to go by the name Dave Wellhausen? I knew him then, he was a great player.
