I found an old Marine Band in some of my dad's old stuff the other day. It seems to be functional other then the fact that someone (my dad no doubt) did that thing were you hack off the tips of the comb were it swelled past the reed plates. It'd be fun to replace the comb on it and make it playable again, but the little internet research I did seems to indicate that there isn't really a way to pick up a replacement comb without spending much less then one would for a new harp. Does anyone know otherwise?

Thanks!
Tom

@ Tom
The comb may not need to be replaced.
If the ends of the comb (tines) are somewhat flush with the reedplates it can be sanded and finished to be like new.
I have refurbished old harps for people for the same reason and I usually make it a point not to replace anything if at all possible.
Quit often it is possible. Just something to think about.

Tom,

Listen to Chromaticblues, he knows of that which he speaks. In fact, I'd recommend sending it to Kevin (chromaticblues) to let him try.

By the way, Kevin. Those GM's you just sent me are great. You'll be getting a handfull more as soon as I get back from Alaska.

Yes, I'm affiliated as only a satisfied customer can be.

Is $15 a reasonable price for a replacement comb?

I've been restoring combs for years and found that no matter how well you seal them, some of them will still swell, maybe one in fifty. You can eventually get them to be flat, sealed and stay flat, but it can be a very long process. Used combs are unpredictable.

I'll be offering my combs for $15. Either you do the work to install them and I mail you the combs, or send me the harps and I install them, make the harps airtight, clean, correct any obvious reed shape problems, gap and tuning touch up. Same price, but you pay for shipping...

More details on my website in a few days....

Well… here’s what I’m working with. Please excuse the poor photographic quality. (It’s the best my little itouch could muster and it’s very sensitive, so be nice!)

Arzajac, $15? Sweet! We might have a deal.

It looks like a nice harp, Tom. I'd definitely have someone, like one of the gents above, fix it up. If they said the comb could be fixed I'd keep it. If they say I need another I'd have it replaced.

Look up Randy Sandoval of Genesis Harmonicas. They are worth every cent regardless of if they are Corian or wood. He makes them all by hand and I swear by them. If you like wood he has regular woods as well as more exotic types and can make them flat or round edged and usually has plenty in stock.
