Do you mean you can't get the screws back in to secure the reedplate to the comb? That's because they use cheap screws. All manufacturers use cheap screws, but the cheaper the harp, the worse it is.

Try turning the screw counterclockwise until you hear and feel a click and then start turning clockwise. If it won't go, do it over again so that you align the thread. If that fails, either swap screws and try to find one the works, or go out and buy some better screws.

You can also try banging the harp on a table like when you shuffle a deck of cards. Try to get all the screws mostly in before you tighten them. And don't overtighten them.

I'm not sure, but I think the Huang harps use M2 screws.

it was just the covers i took off. it was way harder than i thought it would be. i might just stick to running hot water through the harp and drying it out.

it was a huge pain in the ass!

it was my first time ever trying to clean a harp.

When you're installing the screws do NOT tighten any of them down (not even "snug") until you have all the screws started. Then align the reed plate with the comb and snug them down from the middle out.

Hope this helps...

And don't over-tighten them. The reedplate is quite soft and the thread will strip.

You are having a problem with the cover plate screws right?

I own a Huang Star Performer.

It is the only harp that I have which has this type of cover plate screw. there are 4 individual screws that self tap fix into the reed plates to secure the cover plates.

I took a couple out to see how easy they would screw back in. One went back in straight away but the other took me over a minute with the screw wobbling this way and that. There seems to be a fine tolerance in lining up the screw over the hole.

I wonder if it helps to return the screws to the exact holes thay came out of.

You could try seeing which screws fit best into which holes with the cover plates off, then re-assemble with the cover plates on.

I probably wouldn't use hot water to clean the harp as this may adversly affect the reeds. You could pop the harp in luke warm water with a denture cleaning tablet for a while then wash out under running water.

With the plates still on?

What about just dunking the harp whole in a mixture of water and peroxide? or is peroxide bad for harps?

Actually what is ok to clean em with? I'd rather not have to take it apart again. it was horrible I thought I stripped the screws.

There's no need cleaning unless a reed get stuck or out of tune. Which happens quite a lot. You also need to disassemble the harp for gapping which you should start with eventually. The main reason why I buy marine band deluxe or sp20 instead of marine band classics is the nice screws (which are better, IMHO on the deluxe than xover) and the nut and bolt versus the classic's nails...

When I want to really clean plates and reeds I put them in vinegar for fifteen minutes. This'll clear them up. Other ways are ultrasound cleaner but haven't tried that yet.

Yeah leave the plates on if you don't want the hassle with the screws. Don't know about peroxide.

If you don't get any further suggestions on cleaning harps on this thread try the Forum Search and type in Cleaning harps. There's quite a lot of info there.

do they make harps with larger screws? or are they all really small? I'm sort of a shakey person so small screws don't really work well for me. (should have thought of that before)

or wondering if i can just drop the harp in some sort of cleaner in one piece. as long as its got a plastic comb.

what about wood combs as long as there sealed?

The Huang Silvertone as I recall uses what I call jacket screws. One part screws into the other, just the same way Hohner Deluxe and Crossovers do. They will go together, you just need to be patient and keep trying. Sometime it takes a few attempts to get them together.

Or take them to a watchmaker and ask him if he can assemble them for you for free as goodwill... Or get a friend without the shakes to help you out...
