Hi Guys,
Can anyone tell me what Nic is doing in this riff at 1:23 in the first video while playing the Delta Sonic.

Thanks.

Thinks it's a tongue warble. Open mouth to cover four holes and move tongue from side to side touching the comb. I think?

at 1:23, it sounds like an octave inhale 4,7, reeds slightly out of tune and he is really digging into it forcefully. ---------- The Iceman

What is he doing? He's cutting our heads!
I agree with Tooka, some kind of tongue warble

I'd call it a tongue flutter, then working up and down the scale a bit. Like tmf74 says, not the side-to-side kind. ---------- Go ahead and play the blues if it'll make you happy. -Dan Castellaneta

Hey I've got an idea. Rick, do you think you could ask Nic or would that not be cool?

Yeah, I will see Nic at the jam on Sunday. I'll ask him if I think about it.
My guess is it is a tongue pump.

Iceman, he is shameless. ;-)
When I first met Nic four years ago he was 13 and his chops were amazing... his riffing. The next step up was the following year when his phrasing took a big leap forward with his melodic ideas.
The next year he worked on tone and his playing got this huge warm sound. He also mastered playing the high reed bends.
And the latest focus seams to be adding drama, tension, and emotion to his solos.
That seems to be the arc of his development on harp.

The most amazing aspect of Nic's video is the fact that you could actually HEAR his solos. It's almost as if the band members suddenly get stricken by a muscular paralysis nerve toxin, and instead of wailing on the drums and guitar/bass like 99.99% of blues jam bands do, they actually lay-off the decibels and sedately accompany Nic and allow Him to play.
It sounds like you run a very strict, organized jam. Well done!

Nice 3rd position stuff. I'd say Nic is doing side to side tongue flutters and just moving up and down the harp. It's a variation on a fairly popular riff usually played in 2nd position with rolls (most folk call them warbles ).

His simply playing, IMO, a 2/4,3/5,4/6 warble ascending, then descending. I use this a lot in 3rd position.

@ 1.23 sounds like a 1/4 split,tongue on/off flutter. ----------

CarlA- Nic is playing with my band, the host band of the jam. The guitar player/singer is also a bandmate of Nic's in Bad Brad & The Fat Cats. So, these guys know how to back a harp.

I talked to Nic. It is a side-to-side tongue flutter starting on 1-4 draw, walking it up and down the harp.
