Just bought some Huang Silvertone Deluxe harps in the keys of C and G. I've never played harp before but thought I'd give it a try. So what do you guys think of Huangs?
They were pretty cheap from what id seen most other harps go for. There was no real damage to the harps but they sure weren't like they were in the picture on amazon although I'm still waiting for the C harp.
i picked 'em cause I was on a budget and I seen a video online saying that the reeds are supposed to last a long time.

Ah, Little Grasshopper.
You are truly on the path.
What you may discover is that all brands have their own characteristics. You may eventually want to buy a few others...Hohner, Lee Oscar, etc, and see how they work with wherever you are on the learning curve.
As time goes on and your skills improve, you may find yourself drawn to a specific brand that just feels right to you...and this also may change over time.
(I started out as a Marine Band man, moved to SPecial 20's, then was a Lee Oscar lover for many years and finally decided upon Golden Melody as my harmonica of choice).

Go to the forum search and type in Huang. There's quite a few reviews and opinions.

Welcome to the forum! I'm a Hohner guy myself. Sp20 is a very nice harp for it's cost! Crossover is a very nice harp. It's a good thing starting out with a not too good harp like the Huang. The next harp you buy will seem like a dream and you'll have super strong bending muscles :D ---------- Pistolkatt - Pistolkatts youtube

Yeah I know there not the best harps Pistolcat but I figured its probably better than a blues band right?
I was looking for a harp that was good enough to learn on I hope I made the right choice. I was gunna go with a blues band and then I seen a guy on youtube that made them sound like crap in a review he did.
Still thinking about getting a blues band just to compare the two.

@Rubes - c'mon. He is a brand new beginner. He can start to learn on a Huang just as well as he can on a Special 20.
@Silverharp: Part of the learning process WILL be experimenting with different harps, but right now you need to learn BASICS. Embouchure. What does "second position" mean? How to play single notes. What does "12 bar blues" mean? What is tongue blocking. There are lots of lessons on the web.

Gotta start somewhere. We can't all afford the better harps. But like a crooked pool cue, if you can play with a bad one you can sure as hell play with a good one when you get one. Practice your heart out, learn proper breathing and one hole accuracy. Then sometime in the future save up enough to get a key of C in a better brand, then another key, and so on. I just happened to be lucky when I started. A coworker decided he didnt want to play anymore and gave me a bunch of Special 20s and a couple Lee Oskars. I ended up not caring for them and then selling those to someone else and got some Golden Melodies and those became my favorites.I tried a Marine band but did not care for it. I have sense ended up with several more including 3 customized by my favorite customizer as well as some of his custom combs. However, ironically I am starting to also warm up to Marine Bands. Give it time, practice with the cheaper set and work your way up. You'll get there. ---------- Bend it like Ricci - Me

I'm going to throw in the opinion of a fresh noob...I just started myself.
I got SP20's because they were recommended, and they were great for me.
I happened to get a few bluesband for free, so I tried them....wow...thankfully I didn't try and learn on them, I would have quit the first day if that's all I had!
Take this for what it's worth...harmonicas are cheap...25.00 or 35.00 for an instrument isn't really good compared to something like a guitar...but a fairly decent one like a SP20 to learn on...that way you won't be frustrated with the hardware and will be able to see results that are accurate and not skewed by crappy hardware.
Now...I have no idea if the harps you bought are good or not...I'm just saying, don't be frustrated by going cheap.

Silverharp88, where do you live? Like many players, I learned to play on my own, didn't meet another harp player for 15 years. I'd highly recommend finding some experienced player to sit down and show you the ropes.

Nope no teachers. I taught myself bass. I taught myself to play the spoons. and I also play the wash tub bass as well. I'm gunna start messing around with the guitar again also.
I picked up the harp because of how portable they are and I thought it would sound good with my buddies banjo playing and my gut-bucket.
I'm not trying to be king harp player just as long as I can make something that I think sounds good.
I'll do ok I got youtube and a book. and I'm very interested in the harp.
it does seem like a high maintenance instrument though.
