I have a nice GM that is assembled with pins. I want to change over to screws. What size do I need and what are the best places to purchase. Thanks in advance for the benefit of your experience!
All the best,
Jay

Would the same size and length work to replace screws in MBs? I'm not wanting to get in the habit of this but I'm getting better at tweaking my harps and I think it will be worth the effort with some of my existing harps to get in and out a little easier. Thanks, Jay

Hi Jay.

I just uploaded a video on removing those kinds of pins this morning. I use a flush cutter to get the pins out without damaging the reedplates or comb.

I get M2 screws, 10mm long. You don't need to drill the pin holes to tap. I use whatever sized bit I have on hand to make the clearance hole (3/32 or larger).

Microfasteners.com or ebay. Actually, I keep a bunch
of M2 taps and could sell you one along with some screws.

Edit: I just saw your second post. Yes, 10mm M2 work perfectly in MBs. M1.6 are the other most popular sized harp screws, used in current GMs and Seydels. But if the harp came with pins, I believe the pin holes are too large to tap for M1.6.

Actually, the 1.6mm screws work perfectly on these harps. You don't even need to tap them. Just take your time and any steel screw will self tap through the soft brass. This is actually a very easy convestion.

If you don't happen to have flush cutters, you can just flatten a head on a ten-penny nail, position it over the pointed end of the pin, give it one good rap and the pin pops out very easily.

When removing the pins be careful not to bend the reedplates. It is a tricky procedure!

And for god's sake... don't do this on the carpet!

McMaster Carr is a real good place to get those screws, taps & drill bits.
