There was a thread here in the past where somebody posted a question as to what recordings featured Kim Wilson as a sideman. One of the recordings many people referenced was a release by Barrelhouse Chuck from 2006, "Got My Eyes On You". It truly is a great recording--it's a must for anybody's blues collection.
Well, Chuck has been at it again and has just released a CD which rivals "Got My Eyes On You" for top honors for straight-ahead, solid Chicago blues. Kim sounds absolutely amazing, in an understated, powerful way, throughout the CD. He covers a number of vocals and blows harp on most of the tracks. The brand new release is "Driftin' From Town To Town" and it's available from Chuck's website, www.barrelhousechuck.com. Interestingly, it's not only a blues CD--in addition to classic Chicago blues material, there's Chuck Berry, some soulful stuff, other things. Kim shines throughout, as does Chuck and a stellar band.
Kim is the quintessential his style/old school blues master. When a harp player can play a 3-4 min solo, keep peoples interest without the chugging, and fancy fiddling jazz licks, wow he can go 10min,but what for, getting older and better.
Thanks CBM for the recommendation of 'Got my eyes on you'; some awesome stuff on it. I'm a big fan of Kim Wilson. The richness, sharpness and smoothness of his tone is something I can only dream of achieving. ---------- Lucky Lester
KingoBad, Second that, Ludela. I gotta believe KW was "prepared" that night. He somehow maintains restraint but sounds like a caged beast ready to rip something apart on cue.
Kim is superb. he keeps getting better as he gets older. There can be no doubt that when it comes to living blues harp players, Kim is the benchmark. The new recordings with Barrelhouse Chuck sound great. I can feel another purchase coming on....
If you want to hear his understated and most professional playing as side man, Mark Knopfler's latest recording is one to check out. ---------- The Iceman
