The family and I are on Maui right now. Amazing ukulele player/singer at the bar: Damien Mykal Awai. OMB (uke w/heavy bass on bottom string). He's got an incredible groove and he sings like Hawai'i's version of Aaron Neville. I haven't checked out these links, but the man is a major talent.

Here's "Sunshine of Your Love." This is just a taste; it starts at the 1:30 point. Live, Awai's uke was miked up in a way that gave it a big low indeterminate bass-frequency thump. I wondered at first if he were using a rhythm track, because his groove was so damn steady and locked in. But no: it all came off the uke. Phenomenal music. If you're talking about one solo stringed instrument player accompanying his own singing and providing dance music as he does, this guy is brother to the Delta bluesmen of old--but he's also a 21st century update. My kind of music.

Are you in Kapalua? I'm just down the road in Napili on vacation - Had a fun loose jam with two Canadian Uke players last night - and will be jamming again tonight. Come on over if you feel like it - or I'd meet some where and buy you a drink.
Priority is family I'm sure - but if you feel like it- email me and I'll give you my cell. ----------
