Despite our best efforts, Ronnie and I were unable to scare up enough preregistrants to make the Memphis workshop on 6/22 doable. We weren't even close to the breakeven point, much less a minimum-acceptable-profit point. Because of the room rental fee, Ronnie's plane ticket, and the hotel fees, we can't cut things as close as, for example, Jeff and I cut HCH. And we owed it both to those who were flying in and to Brandon Santini (who will quickly need to find another gig for 6/22) to pull the plug the moment it was clear that the event wasn't finding enough traction.
Ronnie and I were both surprised at the lack of interest, since our three previous events had done very well up front, but you can't squeeze blood from a stone. We're realists, not whiners. As for the handful of people who have come out of the woodwork in the week since we canceled: you're too late. We would certainly have appreciated your patronage earlier in the cycle. We'll hope to see you next time.
Next time is September 7 at the Grand Dell in Campbell, California, part of greater San Jose. Shellist, Gussow, Kumar, and David Barrett.
