Had a credit with MF and used it on a Marine Band propack. Pleased to say that all 3 harps ( C,G,A) played well out of the box. I am talking regular crossharp blues style with the attendant bends etc. Quite pleasant after some other MBs that I have had that required I gap and finesse a bit to make usable.

The last couple Special 20s I purchased played quite well out of the box, too.

I've had similar experience with new Hohners. They have really upped their QC.

Uh-oh. Meanwhile I took delivery yesterday of a Special 20 in C, and it is suboptimal, not terrible. But who knows how long it had been sitting in a warehouse or something? I guess it's still the luck of the draw to some extent.

The current stock is awesome out of the box....for out of the box. If vendors are shipping pre boxed harps or early blister packs, they aren't as awesome.
The MB five pack is a better deal because the cover artist is a sexy beast. ---------- Mantra Customized Harmonicas My Website

No matter to me. I use the Special 20 exclusively for practice and save the Crossovers for performance situations. When I blow out several Special 20s, I send them to Andrew for reed replacement and some optimizing. They come back essentially the same as Crossovers (to my perception), so I put a little adhesive star on them for ID and treat them the same way.
