At present I'm gradually exploring the world of amplified harmonica, and I'm looking for advice on cables. So far I've used budget priced cabling, and I'm wondering if this is a false economy.
In future when buying cables would it be worth investing in the more expensive sort? If so could you tell me why, and also give me some idea of prices or names to look for. ??

When it comes to cables price & performance have very little in the way of a linear relationship. Dirt cheap cables are unlikely to be great but once you get above ~$30 for 10ft-15ft it's a matter of listening to them. I have heard some great $200-$300 cables....but they still don't sound any better than others I can find for $30.

Klotz La Grange, Lava, Planet Waves are worth checking out.

Some actual models of cable from the same manufacturer sound entirely different too (Sommer Session II is great, Sommer Spirit is like a piece of wet string for harp). Basically if you don't notice anything wrong, don't sweat it. When you get the opportunity do a back to back comparison & go with your ears.

All working cables will deliver sound to your amp, better is relative but there are so many brands out there I doubt anyone has tried them all.
