How many volts does your mic produce on a volt meter when you play normally? And when you play loud?

I think it will be in the range of .4 to 2.0 volts.

If you have multiple mics, which one produces the most volts?

What would be considered the normal range for a Shure CM element?

Thanks.

My most commonly used dynamics are around 1.5-1.7VAC...I have heard of particularly hot mics hit ~6VAC. A hot Shure CR/CM may get into this region.

Anything over a volt should be OK, if you have no headroom with a high voltage mic, using a lower gain preamp tube at the input stage increases the signal swing (headroom) available.

When you play into a meter, you can't help but play loud because you always want to get the "high score"! ;-)

Clip an RMS AC voltmeter accross your free mic cable plug, with a 4.7Meg resistor bridging the clips/tip & sleeve.
