Hi. I recently got a VHT Special 6 amp customised for harp.My Green Bullet mic is too volatile for it & I wondered that if I was to alter it to low impedance would that make it compatible & give me the overdrive tones required? An SM58 gives me about the right volume but is not really driving it.

I'll start of with this: What model Green Bullet? (520DX?)

Go ahead and play the blues if it'll make you happy.

Sounds like something is wrong I have a 520D and it works fine. Try switching the amp to low power and see if that works. In what situations is it too powerful? What tube setup are you using?

If you're playing at home, then a 5 watt amp can be very loud indeed. The VHT has a low power switch which can help with to make the power valves saturate at lower volumes. Even then it can still be pretty loud in the home.

"An SM58 gives me about the right volume but is not really driving it"

The SM58 is low impedance and will not drive the amp enough to get the tones you seek. Any mic that's wired to low impedance will simply be the same.

There are a number of things you can do to help you drive the amp at lower volumes. The simplest ones are changing the preamp valve to a 12AY7 or using an overdrive pedal like a Lone Wolf Harp Break in front of the amp. These things will give you some overdrive and help you overdrive the amp at lower volume levels. The biggest single thing you can do though is to work on your mic cupping and harp playing techniques.

The fact that the SM58 works with your amp at a lower level is mostly likely explained not by its being low impedance, but by your using the wrong cable.

Right: XLR<-->XLR cable + Impedance matching transformer
Wrong: XLR to 1/4" cable

The latter gives you only half of the mic's signal and an impedance mismatch. IF you hook it up the right way it will be louder.

As a rule - impedance makes NO DIFFERENCE in terms of output or volume as long as it is matched between mic and amp.

The VHT is indeed loud in your living room and has a harsh overly gainy 12AX7 preamp tube out of the box. Try a 5751 tube in there or 12AY7 and feedback will be more manageable.
