For those of you who work out, cardio, weights, running, walking or whatever. What do you listen to while you grind it out? In the last couple of weeks I've used J.Geils Live, James Cotton's Best of Verve, Jason Ricci's Down at the Juke and Blood on the Road, Mark Ford with the Robben Ford Band. Admittedly, I skip over the slow tunes at the gym but these selections all have plenty of energy producing tunes. All the best, Jay
From their 1989 LP "The Big Break" (Alligator) as well as 1997's "Deluxe Edition (Alligator)
I was under the weather and I wasn't getting better, so I went to get a physical check When I went to the doc it was a heck of a shock, he told me boy you are a miserable wreck He said your liver's all swollen and your stomach's got a hole in it, from drinkin' too much for too long There's a good indication you've got bad circulation 'cause your blood pressure's almost gone You got no reflexes in your solar plexus when I tap you on the top of your knee He said your pulse ain't steady and your lung's getting ready to collapse every time that you breathe And at the rate you're goin' all the tests are showin', boy, you'll never live to get old But I came up with a plan to make you healthy again, but son you gotta do what you're told That's when he told me:
If you dig it, don't do it And if you like it, better leave it alone And if it's too much fun that ought to clue you son That you're probably doing something that's wrong I'm surprised at you and all the things you do 'Cause that ain't what your body is for And if you think it's bad so far, wait till after this guitar 'Cause the doctor said a whole lot more
(guitar break)
Cut out your boozing, quit them drugs you been using, and don't be smoking no cigarettes And you know lovin' a stranger nowadays boy is just like playin' Russian roulette Get the grease outta your diet - better broil it, don't fry it - and don't you eat no more barbecueI wouldn't tell you no lie, take this rule and apply. Now listen to what else you better do:
You better cut out all sweets, and don't be cramping your feet in them pointed-toe Italian shoes Boy look-a here, you're gonna damage your ears playin' them loud rockin' rhythm and blues And if a rabbit don't eat it, buddy you don't need it. That's the rules of your new menu You better get you a pen, I ain't gonna say it again, 'cause there's a whole lot more that you need to do: You need to lose some weight, you need to stand up straight. Boy, your posture is a terrible disgrace You need to suck in your gut, you need to tuck in your butt, you need to clear them zits up off of your face.
And I kept waitin' and waitin' for the man to finish, but the sucker just went on and on... on and on...

Music is a POWERFUL exercise tool, on the cardio portion of what I do, upbeat music has increased my output 20%-30%..(I used to read)).
Opening sequence of Highway Star and Burn (Deep Purple) followed by George Thorogoods In the Nightime absolutely blows out the calories over about 20 min on the stationary bike with the right tension and peddling to the beat (80-100 rpm).
and the best part?.........the time flys by..seriously.

I went to a Gym, once.. The grunts, groans and farts were not music to my ears. Don't forget the guy who popularised jogging died at 55 from a heart attack
The diet of most body buiders kills them young..huge muscles when unused turn to fat(don't mention the steroids) And now of course it's is time for the cliched clincher..my Grandad smoked from the age of 13 to 98 ..the doctors said it was the smokes that killed him
Go for a decent walk every day and undereat is the way to go.
And don't wear music earphones 'cos you won't hear the train, bus, coming. Blues is best heard in a Bar with a beer and good company and Classical in a comfy chair with a single Malt or a nice Port. If the Gestapo had put me on an exercise machine for 5 minutes i'd of betrayed my uncle.(or died of boredom first) Hey just razzin'..the dog has fetched his lead so it's off to the park we go.
I too like to have a random shuffle on my iPod at the gym but when it comes to doing some road running, especially when i'm doing a longer run,I like to start of with Dolly Parton 9 to 5 it just gets me going at the right pace, I once started a 10k race with nirvana and I was totally wasted by about 2k.
---------- Living the dream and learning the blues one little trouble at a time.
@Jehosaphat: wow.....you must have been waiting for this thread for a long time. Glad we gave you the opportunity to get all of that off of your chest! All the best on your journey! Jay ---------- Music speaks where words fail.
I have over 7000 songs of many genres on my iPod & I most frequently just put it on random.
When I do turn on something specific it's rarely blues harmonica. On some occassions I have specifically chosen include Paul Delay Band Nice & Strong, Jason Ricci (w/wo NB), Little Walter complete chess collection on random, Mikey Junior's new acoustic album, Paul Butterfield Blues Band usually live or first 3 albums, Red Devils, Satan & Adam all albums on random.
My least favorite genre to workout to is classical music. I really should create a playlist, maybe someday...
I too listen to the garbage gym music -it makes me get in and out of the gym quickly Also how else would I know how bad Rhianna etc are
When I can control the music there it is usually Johnny Winter, AC,DC and Skynyrd ( get the cds from my truck)

I quit going about a year ago. But when I was going I had a playlist "Sir Size" full of fast loud music to keep me motivated and block the crappy gym "music." Now I mainly ride my bike and sing/do singing exercise while riding, now that I started lessons, and have also started swimming. I think about music/practice as much as listening to it these days. It used to be surgically attached go weeks without listening to my i-pod.
@ agree with jehosaphat. Excersise is good, i just put on my ipod and walk 3-4 kays at Kentlyn (google it) near the river every 6 weeks or so. Jimmy Reed usually gets my walking speed in rythm.
