I got another chance to sit in with a singer/ guitarist at his gig in a little restaurant/bar. I have learned the lyrics, and a good harp line for “Memphis Information”, by Chuck Barry, and I was considering asking if I could try it, when someone in the audience asked for the song! The guitar played said he did not know it so I started in on the melody and he picked it up right away on the guitar. We were playing un-amplified, it is tough to project over a noisy bar crowd! I screwed up and started into the second verse twice, but remembering the words of Ronnie Shellist from last Friday, I just plowed ahead with all the confidence I could muster and did the verse again, then finished the verses in order. Overall I think it was well received. I saw a few people leaning forward to try to hear my weak vocals but at least they were listening. I could see a few folks moving to the beat during my harp playing. Another fun night at this very casual venue.

dangit. lost a whole post!
STME, very cool that you took that step! Having been a singer for about 20 years now I can still remember my first times singing. My voice started out very reedy too. I couldn't hit all the notes and had no idea what my "good" vocal keys were. Since I was in a band and doing half of the vocals I had a rough time for a while. No voice for a day or 2 after some gigs! Which some said was an improvement! I found that a few lessons with a voice coach helped me a lot. Strengthening some muscles in chest, diaphragm, throat, etc,, much like playing harp, helped me a lot with focusing my air power. These days I sound pretty good acoustically and so having a mic is a plus. Like with harp playing, a sound system or mic and amp will amplify what's there. A big benefit to me with singing is, I get to pick material to work up with the band or duo partner. My current partner actually has brought things in for me to sing that work really great as well like some Jimmy Reed I had overlooked and some TBone Walker. As well I can write material and at least try it out with him. The last cd my wife and I did was all our own work as a matter of fact. There is a freedom coupled with a connection to both band and audience that is really fulfilling when you get comfortable and find your voice. You are going to LOVE IT man. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
