When I first started playing amplified I bought a used 520DX and a pignose amp. It's been two years and I'm looking to upgrade this summer. I'm on Greg's waiting list for a Kalamazoo amp and have started looking at mic's. I know this can be a touchy subject for everyone on this forum but I wanted to get some input anyways. I want to stick to a bullet mic and will probably be looking for a cr/cm element. Also, I've done a fair amount of research on shure shells and would love to find a brown bullet small shell to build. But my question is what we're the other shure small shell mic's? We're the 707a's small shells? What about the 440's? I know there are many other options out there but I'm pretty comfortable with my DX and a better element paired with a slightly smaller shell would be perfect.
Thanks! 7.o.3.

I think the 520DX is a bit bigger than the earlier 520s. Is that right? And I think a JT30 is slightly smaller than the Shure bullets. Turners are smaller again I think. Lets face it; I dunno. I've only got JT30 style shells and an EV605. The info is out there though. ----------

I have been looking at the same thing. There is an excellent thread here that compares shell sizes http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/1146763.htm
Hope that helps

@Seven.Oh.Three, Given you're on Greg's Zoo list you already know the value he provides. The wood mics are not inexpensive but if you keep the options down to the essential volume control the cost will provide you with a gorgeous mic for a lifetime that you might never need replace or supplement. I followed that path, having just got a Model One Zoo from Greg. My wood mic is a bit more elaborate than described above but I'll wager it doesn't sound any better than if it was a bit simpler.

The 707a shell is smaller outside but houses the same elements as a 520. I had Greg mod a EV M43U military mic, switched it from low to high z, added a volume pot in the shell and a 5/8" to 1/4" for cable. It's definitely smaller than a bullet and has every bit as mug=ch punch as a typical cm element. It's pretty much the size of the American salt shaker type mics. My current favorite is a Shure 585 high z stick mic in a holder. In fact last gig we played, I screwed the M43U onto a mic stand and played that way all night, and doubled on vocals through that mic. With the Lone Wolf delay pedal it sounded awesome on stage but didn't really take the vocals out where they needed to be. Harp sound got very good grades though. I have used Silvertone 1482's for years now, good compromise between light and portable, and decent output even in a 5 piece configuration like last Friday. We had a guest keyboard guy come in and that mic/amp held up well as usual.
I would also recommend that you think about a delay pedal when you have the extra. It will add a new dimension to your playing. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
