I’ve been playing for about a year, and I’m now starting to considering entering the world of amplified harmonica. I’ve been avoiding it for a few reasons. One is I’ve been afraid that it might make me sloppy and lazy went it comes to technique and developing good acoustic tone. The other is money. But I think I’d like to go for it. As I begin to save up the funds, I was hoping that a few of you might be able to help point me in the right direction.

I’m fairly settled on my amp of choice. I think I’d like to go for a VHT Special 6. It’s cheap (especially if I can snatch up a used one), and I don’t want to over think my gear purchases, so why not go with something that everyone seems to agree on as a great place to start?

What I am clueless about, however, is the microphone. Here are a few things I THINK I want in a mic:

A good clean tone. It seems to make since that having a mic that delivers a good clear signal and allows the amp to handle all the overdriving would lead to the most versatile tone options. Is this true? I could be talked out of this.

A volume knob. From my experiences as an armature guitar player, I’m always impressed be how much simply rolling on or off an instrument’s volume knob can effect the tone of the amp. I would think this would be a very nice feature to have on a harp mic too, but again… I could be talked out of this?

A classic bullet shape. This just seems like the best fit with the back of a harmonica, and the easiest shape to get a nice tight cup around, but I could be mistaken… and could certainly be talked out of this. :)

So… are these all things that could be obtained on a budget? Or what should a guy like me REALLY be looking for? Again, I don’t want to over think this. Aw crap… I think I’m already over thinking it…

Thanks in advance to the help and happy Easter!

Good choice on the amp. I'll leave it to others to recommend a microphone. I have heard good things about the Hohner JT-30 Roadhouse mic, and it goes on sale occasionally for $50.

"One is I've been afraid that it might make me sloppy and lazy went it comes to technique and developing good acoustic tone".

Don't have to worry about the reason mentioned above, they both can be developed in synchronicity. You can use a glass or similar objects to practice with for the time being :)
