Does anyone have any ideas or advice about how to hold in the slide on a chromatic (I've recently bought a 16 hole Super 64X) hold a bullet mic and play all at the same time? I find cupping the mic with something this big enough of a problem without having to hold in the slide as well and I really like the sort of Little Walter, Kim Wilson Eb thing. Has anyone made a small device other than an elastic band or discovered a hand position I've not thought of?

If it's the main thing you're using this harp for, you could take the slide off and flip it over. giving you D Minor 3rd position with the slide in and Eb with it out.

It's not conventional and I'm sure I'll get criticised here for this, but if cupping in Eb is more important, or you need to cover a recording session or something, it may be a solution for you.

Well, that's an ingenious solution! Not what I want to do with this harp as it's a bit intimidating to mess around with inside and I use it more conventionally more often but I will give some thought to doing it with my old Larry Adler.

i prefer a stick mic with big harps but i do use a green bullet. i dont hold the harp like a small ten holer. i hold the mic in my left with the palm pinkie ring and middle finger, and hold the chrom wherever i am playing with the index and thumb. i use my right hand to slide the harp to where i get the best tone on the mic and operate the button with my right index (the big 64 has alot of room to grab it like this). i like using the button too. when you let the button out you play Eb on the C side in 10th position which is around the middle of the harp. when you play in D third on the C side you jab the button in hard and gliss draw up to the high end and do some high tweaky noodles in 8th position. practice this before you play out. its not hard you can hold a green bullet and play with one hand if you want to. and use the button its really fun to press the button dont be scared.

Stevelegh's suggestion is a good one... pretty sure that's exactly what a lot of blues chromatic players do--flip the slide... probably have multiple chromatics in the natural state, as well as the "flipped" state.

A more comfortable mic would definitely help as well.

The slide swap is good if you have multiple chromatics. If though you want to learn how to cup a bullet mic and a big 16 hole chromatic, then I'd suggest watching Dennis Gruenling and Mark Hummel on YouTube for tips. The easiest way I find is to hold the chromatic in your left hand about a third of the way up the harp so that your index finger is approximately around the 8 hole mark. Then hold your bullet as normal. This way you are cupping a good section of the harp and can still reach the button when you need too. Like the way Little Walter is cupping the chromatic in these pics.
