My group and I have been recording our first record and I uploaded two tunes. Little Mixed up is a good cut and the other is just a raw jam. Let me know you guys input. We have been working hard to capture the sound. Hope you all enjoy. Little mixed up has overdubbed vocals by myself. I play all the harp and vocals on these tracks. It is literally the easiest recording we have done. One single ribbon mic in my old wood floor house. and the band about 4ft back from me.

Overall sounds good to me. Especially for how and where your recorded it. Sounds tight. Not crazy about the vocals but I am very hard to please when it comes to vocals. I think you do have a good voice just needs some fine tuning. Vocals are a little dry and slightly to loud in the first song. Love the overall tone of all the instruments. Especially the harp. Would have like it to be a little more out front of the mix on the first song. The drums are just a little to strong in the first song and way to much on second. The are a few things the drummer does in the first song that are slightly distracting. The guitar is right on in the first song but in the second it got buried.
Overall very nice and did enjoying listening. Thanks for sharing.
One more thing, not only does your harp tone sound killer, your harp playing rocks! Loved it.

I like it! But I wouldn't necessarily call it "Chicago" blues. It seems sort of amplified/down home...
But I like it, and I think the rough vocals fit the overall vibe. Nice harp, appropriate to the groove. ----------

@ Ray The scene is decent. One thing I can say is there are some excellent musicians here. My band we are all under 28 years old. I use a handful of good drummers and upright players. As for harp there are just a few good blues players that I have meet.
@ shbamac
Thanks. Little mixed up is sang through the ribbon mic which I love. The other song is me shouting through the harp mic which is a 100% strong 707 so yeah it is too dirty too me also. But my band out here does not use PA systems usually. I sing through old Mascos etc... Two reasons. One is it keeps the volume down. Two is it is a throw back thing. People are always interested in whats that mic and thing your singing through. And thanks for the harp comment. I have not being playing to long but I always have had a kind of reckless style of playing I find myself deep into it on some tunes and go nuts i guess.
@dougharps
Thanks, yeah Little mixed up etc is kinda down home etc.. We are recording today also. We will def have some straight chicago stuff. We do alot of guitar slim sounding stuff too. I like to mix it up. Our gigs we just have a good time and get people dancin so some nights we do Memphis jump all night and when we play a straight blues bar its muddy wand walter all night. Our sound is kind of all over the place

I have two nephews that have lived there all their lives. Both pretty good on guitar and bass. Davey Mullinax and Daryl Mullinax. Identical twins and they are in your age range.

Huh wow. I have never met them. Just had a newborn so I do not get out to much besides all the gigs I play and like once a week or so for a blues jam. The scene here is hard. There are a lot of the same players every town has that come out every week to jams and never learn new things or try new things and then there are people here that are incredible. But I will say this. There are plenty of people that act nice to your face but are very jealous etc.. behind your back. I am hoping someday soon to move to Chicago with my family and my guitar guy Danny. I wanna move somewhere where I get my ass kicked every night of the week so I can get better

I liked "A little mixed up", what Doug says, generally. There's something riding over the harp though...a sizzle, like a rattling snare? Hopefully it's just on the Soundcloud, not on the master. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

Huh I will check into that. The harp was laid on with the band I just overdubbed the vocals. Thanks for the help. I will be posting new songs a lot so any input would be great so that I can make this a great record!! The harp on the tune is a little on the sloppy side but it works. I am not into laying 100 takes of a song. It was done in one take.

I couldn't agree more. It drives me nuts when you see so many people covering the same old stuff. There are so many great songs out there to choose from.

Yeah you aint lying. Of course as a harp player I love all the classics but I try very hard to play different stuff. Like check out sammy lewis and willie johnson feel so worried. Or Jimmy rogers my baby dont love me no more or not a trace of you. These are all cool tunes you never hear. It still amazes me when I hear some songs i have never heard. The list just never ends ya know. Gonna redo the harp on the original. It is too busy and rushed which 1st position should never be it is too loud on the vocals too.

Bigtone that is some cool shit! You and the guitar player have something special going on! "I'm A Little Mixed Up" with Harp underneath works well when the original by Betty James was carried with the only the guitar. "Aww Baby" sounds great also. You may want to rethink calling "Love Me Baby" an original though. Anyone that knows Muddy's catalog will know it is pretty much a direct cop of "I Got To Find My Baby" by Muddy with Walter playing in 1st position. That said you guys are laying it down up there in Knoxville. Keep it up! ---------- Thanks, Albey Scholl The Shadows Blind Willies Blues Club Atlanta, GA http://www.blindwilliesblues.com/

Thanks yeah the songs sound similar but the format of the songs are totally different. The only thing that is the same is kinda the vocal melody. There tune is 12 bar no bridge. mine stays on the 1 has stops and has a 4, 2, 5 bridge. And thats why I mentioned changin the harp because that groove made me wanna play that style. Might change to third on 2nd. It is still in the works so well see what it ends up being. That being said i cannot help being heavly drawn to that sound as most of us are. But I cannot call the song a cover of I got to find my baby because it simply is not that song. Thanks for the input Will do what I can to stray away from that songs sound

Aww Baby sounds good. Love Me Baby has the same issue as A Litttle Mixed Up, but it's more noticable, like rustling tin foil.
You're doing things the hard way (technically, but others have made some pretty cool recordings in a similar fashion lately), but it's sounding good otherwise. The benefit of home recording is the fact you can make adjustments easily (well, more easily than schlepping back & forth to a studio at an hourly rate), don't be in a rush. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness
