What small personal recorder would you recommend? The Tascam DR05 and the Zoom H1 are both $99 on Amazon, and the Teac CVR-20 is $52.44. I want to record my own harp playing and also my band's songs, mainly for self-critique purposes. Thanks.

I just picked up a new H1 off of ebay for apx. $79. I used it at an open mic last night, just left it on a table about 3 tables back from the stage. I am happy with what it picked up. I can post an audio clip if I can figure out where to host/post it.

I've owned several Zoom digital recorders and been very happy with all of them. None of them ever broke or malfunctioned in any way. I use a Zoom Q3 HD to make the videos I post here.

+1 on the zoom. don't know anything about the others, but i've had 3 zoom recorders, an h2 that i used for years, a q3hd that has mostly supplanted it, and an h1 i bought for my daughter. all are excellent products.

I had a Zoom H2 until inadvertently reversing it's polarity.
I then had a Zoom H4n but after a year it started the 'no card' message regardless of whatever card was in it.
Even one that it happily recognised 100's of time.
I'm now using the Tascam DR05 and can't discern any drop in sound quality.
You get far better battery life also.
cheers, Mark.

Here's a recording I did at a open mic at a brew pub a few nights ago on the Zoom H1. I just stood the recorder up on a table. It captured the normal bar sounds and fairly decent musical audio in my opinion. I had it set for mp3 format, I have since been told to use the .wav setting for even better quality.
Not sure if soundcloud compresses or grunges the audio, so maybe even better quality than this in raw form.

Just a guitar, harp and cajon. (Edit, sorry I forgot about the standup bass)

@Reedsqueal: That´s really excellent results and severely increases my interest in the Zoom H1.
The bass is a little flat, would be my only objection -- but perhaps that´s the hardest part?

Compared to my Minidisc we´re in another ballpark here.

I own Zoom H2, and compared it to different Tascams. Tascams have the better tone quality. Not a huge difference, but noticeable.
