Had the true privilege last Tuesday of seeing a screening at the fabulous Paramount Theater as part of the SXSW Film Festival of "Muscle Shoals", a documentary film telling the story of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the studios and players of Fame and Muscle Shoals Sound. The list of truly iconic and legendary records and recording artists that worked in Muscle Shoals is almost overwhelming. The film is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen by any criteria. If you ever get a chance to see it I urge you strongly to make every effort to go.

Just to put the cherry on the cake, the rhythm section and some members of the house bands of Muscle Shoals are performing tonight on a rooftop bar in downtown Austin. I was fortunate to earn a Platinum badge as a SXSW volunteer and will be braving unbelievable congestion, lack of parking, and throngs of clueless hipsters to attend.

A couple of hours earlier I'll be going to soul church with Vintage Trouble, a band seen in this forum regarding showmanship some months ago on a video from Later.. with Jules Holland. They have become my favorite new band. I saw them last year at SXSW and last month in Reno opening for The Who. Again, fantastic band that i can't say enough about.

Thanks for sharing about the movie. I'm excited to see it. I grew up in muscle shoals and I've met a few of the people your going to see. You're in for a treat! They are a bunch of soulful dudes. I had the opportunity to sit in with The Decoys a few years back... just one song, but it was still cool to be on stage with an OG Swamper David Hood!

Over the past year, I've been consumed with The Drive-By Truckers. One of the two lead singer/songwriters is Patterson Hood, which is David's son. I just recently watched a documentary on the band and they talked pretty extensively about the importance of that little studio in Muscle Shoals.

Greg Hamm was one of the sound engineers at that studio. Good friend. He's got some stories.

Looks cool. I'm guessing that I'll be able to see this documentary with less anguish than trying to see PFOS.

An update. Saw The Swampers show night before last and it was so damn good. Spooner Oldham sang, "I'm Your Puppet" and "Sweet Inspiration", Will McFarlane sang "Midnight Hour" and well the list just goes on an on. They closed with "Brown Sugar" and I tell you what, that most hackneyed of bar band staples never sounded so good. It was, "Rolling Stones eat your hearts out."

There was a solid but not large crowd but as a new found friend said to me, "Don't think there's anybody here who showed up by accident."

The guys were wandering around for quite some time after. I had a chance to talk to Spooner Oldham and Will McFarlane. Way more to the story but suffice to say it was an extremely rare honor and a privilege just to be there.
