The marker was presented by the Tennessee Historical Commission. It was placed on the west side of State Highway 18 at the intersection with Caldwell road in Malesus, five miles north of Blairs Chapel CME Cemetary where a tombstone was recently erected on Sonny Boy's grave.
The tribute came 42 years to the day after Sonny Boy's tragic death. (He was killed, at the height of his fame on June 1, 1948 by an unknown assailant on the streets of Chicago.) Mayor Charles Farmer was there with a proclamation, so was County Executive Alex Leech. They were joined by Billy Altman, a representative from RCA Records; Dr. David Evans, a music expert from the Memphis State University; scores of relatives from T.W. Utley, Sonny Boy's brother who lives in Jackson; to a host of kin and friends from St. Louis, Chicago and other parts of the U.S.A.

I've visited John Lee Williamson's gravesite; I was taken there by the guy who helped erect the gravestone. It is a challenge to find--a real challenge. It is absolutely NOT visible from the road. You have to hike up a kudzu-covered hill. There was no path. You're bushwhacking, basically. Make sure that you've got good directions.
The gravestone is, I'm guessing, at least 200-300 yards, as the crow flies, from the parking lot of a nearby church. You can't see it from any of the several roads in the area. It's not the sort of cemetary that connects with a nearby church. It's an abandoned, overgrown cemetery.
