Hi all,
This question concerns a mic building project of mine. I recently found a Hohner Bluesblaster on the cheap, and am in the process of turning it into a better mic with CM element, 100k pot and new gasket. I was planning to use the XLR that came with the mic, but I've seen on other forums that the XLR is tricky to wire/won't work properly or something along these lines. Can someone please explain?

There are 3 common ways to wire an XLR connector:
A) Low impedance balanced - signal on pins 2 and 3, ground/shield on pin 1
B) High impedance, unbalanced, Pin 2 Hot- signal on pins 1 and 2. 3 open.
C) High impedance, unbalanced, Pin 3 Hot- signal on pins 1 and 3. 2 open.
Blues Blasters were wired in Config C - the most common config in the U.S. - but Pin 2 Hot is more common in Europe and Asia. The key is that your cable must match the mic. If you ever want to go wireless with the new rig, set it up Pin 2 Hot. ---------- /Greg

Thank you, Greg. I live in the UK, so I'm assuming I need to rewire for pin 2 hot, no?
Man, I should have just bought a switchcraft!

Depends on what u want but that would make the most sense. Just know that BB's weren't shipped configured that way. ---------- /Greg

@Greg "The key is that your cable must match the mic."
for an XLR cable, doesn't the cable just need to connect pin 1 at one end to 'pin' 1 at the other end and 2-2 and 3-3?
sure it's the connection from the socket on the mic to the element and the socket on the amp to the circuitry in the amp that matters.
unless you are connecting an xlr on one end and a jack on the other.

@Lumpy, ideally you don't want a 3 wire cable (more capacitance), but if you did have one, a common practice is to solder unused wires to ground shield (pin 1)
Pin 3 hot is what I have seen most of (in the UK) with regards to Blues Blasters/JT30s, though some CAD labelled JT30S came from the US as pin 2 hot. So I'd go pin 3 hot.
Harpburn, one of your white wires may connect the element to the shell/vol pot? ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

Ah, yes, so it does! After looking closer, the second wire connects to a screw mounted above the XLR, and then goes to the pot.
I take it that the connection to the screw is to ground it, and I should keep this setup with the new element.
