I'm a bit confused as to why you'd want to lower the wattage of the VHT Special 6. It's only 5 watts to begin with and also has a low power switch which knocks it down to about 2 watts.

If you want to change the preamp valve in it, then a NOS 12AY7 or a 5751 works well. The best 12AY7 I have used was an RCA. If you want to change the power valve, then JJ Tesla 6V6 are a good choice.

Put a NOS JAN Philips 5751 in the input socket and a JJ Tesla 6V6S in the power tube socket. The amp will immediately sound great.

You can order both tubes from Tube Depot in Memphis.

How do the clear top RCA 5751 tubes compare to the NOS JAN Philips 5751?

Hello
Many thanks for the answers.
And for you Kingley, - I still need fewer watts - as I would like it to crack more.

6SN7, the reason I prefer the NOS JAN Philips tube is that they are readily available and often less expensive than the RCA. Both sound great.

Tube Depot has the Philips for $34.95. When I first started buying them about six or seven years ago they were $19.95.

A few months ago, I ask the same question in MBH (for a diferent amp, a Bugera V5) and I follow the Rick advice and bought a 5751JAN Philips. That tube is awesome!
