You can not go wrong on Monday night by going to the Legendary White Swan for the Monday night residency of The Little Elmore Reed Blues Band. Without fear of contradiction one of the best blues bands you're likely to see anywhere.
The lineup tends to rotate a bit as some of the members currently play with Canned Heat, The Fabulous Thunderbirds/Kim Wilson, and other such luminaries. But rest assured if one of the regulars is on the road their replacement will be equally a heavyweight.
The White Swan is the definition of a dive bar and it is not exactly located in the picture postcard neighborhood of Austin but this is Austin and even the crackheads aren't too terribly dangerous. Just keep walking and you'll be fine.
The clients of the bar are a mix of some old time E. Austin residents and a lot of the younger crowd that moved into E. Austin because the rents and house prices were cheap. It's been gentrified to a certain degree.
Seriously, just go. You will not be disappointed.
For Sunday brunch you should check out The Twilight Trio, 11-2 at the Trace Restaurant in the W Hotel. No harp player, though I sit in on occasion, but a bit different and really good. Upright bass, guitar..old guitars, old amp..and the lovely Joanna Rameriez on snare drum. They all trade off vocal duties between the three of them. Delta, Very interesting choice of material covering West Coast, Delta, Swing, all sorts and a good line of humor.
Friday or Saturday you could try 6th St. but your chances aren't good to find anything decent, unless J.T. Coldfire is down there. Great Texas blues guitar player but I think he plays week nights.
If your taste runs outside the blues but still within roots/Americana, head to The Continental on S. Congress. One of those places where if you don't know the band you can still be pretty sure they're good 'cause they're at the Continental. Saxon Pub on S. Lamar is also worth checking out.
For the rest pick up a copy of the Austin Chronicle, available everywhere, or look them up on line. ---------- LSC ---------- LSC
