This may seem like a dumb question to some, but as I dont know the answer:

Can a 1/4 input jack be wired for Low Z?

(my assumption is 'Yes', but i want to ask the experts out there)

Yes it can - however a mono 1/4" jack can only be used with "unbalanced" wiring. Balanced wiring is a key part of a low impedance system - it allows longer cable runs and has very low noise. For that you need 3 conductors in the cable. STEREO 1/4" jacks, aka "TRS" ARE used for this instead of XLR when space is an issue.
